What is private health insurance?

Many Australians belong to private health insurance funds. They cover you for treatment as a private patient in private or public hospitals, and can include some services that Medicare does not cover, such as dental and optical services.

Can I access private health insurance as a visitor?

A number of private health funds provide health cover for overseas visitors. Some have special tables of benefits for overseas visitors and others provide similar coverage under hospital tables available to Australian residents. Benefits available, membership costs and eligibility can vary between funds.
