Transport
What public transport is available?
Public transport will vary greatly depending on the area in which you will be living. However, be prepared! Australia’s public transport system is no way near as extensive as the UK’s, especially in London. There is a range of passenger bus, train, ferry, light rail, monorail and taxi services available in each major city, but you will need to check out your local area for more details.
Some of Australia’s rural areas only have basic public transport services such as passenger buses or country rail and depend greatly on private means of transportation.
How do I go about buying a car?
New and second-hand vehicles are advertised for sale in newspapers and magazines, the greatest one of these is the Trading Post available on Tuesdays. They are also available from new car showrooms, second-hand car yards or via online classified such as www.carsales.com.au or www.drive.com.au.
The purchase price of a car does not usually include the cost of registration, stamp duty and compulsory insurance. You’ll need to pay these costs yourself when they are due.
Can I use my UK driver's license?
You will be able to use your UK Driver’s License for 3 months after your arrival in Australia. After that time you will need to apply for an Australian Driver’s License. The process for this will depend on the state where you will be living. Some may require you to sit a knowledge and practical test. For more information see:
